The Prison Administration is subordinated to the Ministry of Justice.
The tasks and the organization of the Prison Administration are laid down in the framework law of 20 July 2018 (cf. Coordinated text of 31 March 2015, p. 93).
The task of the Prison Administration is to head the facilities responsible for the execution of prison sentences imposed by criminal courts. It is also the responsibility of the Prison Administration to ensure the execution of the measures ordered by law.
The Prison Administration includes:
- the Directorate;
- the Centre pénitentiaire de Luxembourg (Schrassig Prison), consisting of a department for men and a department for women;
- the Centre pénitentiaire de Givenich (Givenich Prison), consisting of a department for men and a department for women;
- the Centre pénitentiaire d'Uerschterhaff (Uerschterhaff Prison), which is expected to be operational in 2022;
- the Institut de formation pénitentiaire (Prison Training Institute).
